It is difficult to understate the importance of an effective range of motion for our overall health, and the MTNTOUGH community knows it. When we solicited feedback on our programming, supplemental programming focused on improving range of motion and mobility was at the top of your list. You spoke, we listened. We are stoked to launch MTNMVMT in the MTNTOUGH+ app, and we’re confident it will help to catapult every other program we offer for MTNTOUGHers.
Backcountry athletes, mountain hunters, and special operations all benefit immensely by optimizing our range of motion. Improved range of motion in turn increases mobility, accelerates recovery, aids in balance, and relieves back pain while providing a cardiovascular boost. But the benefits don’t stop there; perhaps as important for our relentlessly busy modern lives, exercises that improve range of motion and mobility also reduce stress, improve focus and mental clarity, and even help us to sleep better.
Trainer Heather Leigh has countless success stories from her clients that speak to these benefits. She has been a trainer focused on functional movement, mobility, breathwork, and meditation for 25 years. Whether it’s to help reduce pain, recover from an injury, or to improve mindfulness and reduce stress, Heather has helped thousands of people to improve their lives.
We collaborated with Heather to build MTNMVMT, and had the opportunity to sit down with her to talk about the many ways range of motion and mobility training can benefit the mountain athlete:
As we develop MTNMVMT, we’re testing different modules and different lengths to find the sweet spots that our intermediate, beginner, and elite MTNTOUGHers will all benefit from the most. The MTNMVMT modules focus on three key problem areas for the backcountry athlete, mountain hunter and military member:
- Big Muscle Groups (i.e. lengthen hamstrings)
- Joints (i.e. gain ankle and achilles tendon flexibility for the mountains)
- Address Pain (i.e. lower back and knees)
