"What sets MTNTOUGH apart is the mission to help the MTNTOUGH community perform better on the mountain and accomplish their goals. Relentless in the pursuit of research & development we know everyone is different...we know some train at home and we know some are just starting out on their journey to become a mentally tough mountain athlete." ~ MTNTOUGH FOUNDER, Dustin Diefenderfer
This is why we created the coached kettlebell program, the MTNTOUGH KB20 ideal for a beginner to elite. We believe KB20 is the perfect at-home training program, this is due a variety of reasons. It's tailored and created specifically for the mountain athlete with an emphasis on leg strength, endurance and mental toughness. Secondly you can literally do this program anywhere, the hotel, garage, living room, home gym or even the gym!
The program is our first "coached" program. You simply grab your kettlebell, hit play and follow along. That being said, anyone can do the workouts, from fittest in the world to complete beginners, and from spry teenagers to seasoned veterans. The way that it's designed enables you to go at your own pace as it's all based on time.
The Big Benefits Of The MTNTOUGH KB20 Kettlebell Program
1. Range of Motion, Strength and Balance:
Someone who has never worked out, or not worked out in a while, needs a place to start. The KB20 program is a the ideal place to start for several reasons. First, it is coached in a follow along format with the MTNTOUGH staff, so you will see, hear and experience essentially live coaching from professionals as you work through program. Secondly, each day the MTNTOUGH coaches will give you beginner options, beginner weight selections and modifications for movements that are too advanced. Lastly, you can complete the KB20 program at your own pace, there are five workout options per week, but you can start with just one per week, or two, or three until your body is ready for more. The KB20 will create the range of motion, strength and balance a beginner mountain athlete needs to progress to the next level in their fitness. Moving in the backcountry is hard and it is much harder if you don't train. You need to build a strong chassis and the KB20 will build the endurance and strength you need for the task.
2. Anyone Can Do It
The beauty of the KB20 is it can be completed with one kettlebell and a pull-up bar. Kettlebells are affordable and widely available and you do not need a full set to start the program, you can simply get a phenomenal workout with one. Barely any space is required and many MTNTOUGH'ers do the KB20 in living rooms, hotel rooms, offices, or even outdoors. A 10x10 space is all you need. Several MTNTOUGH athletes that are traveling professionals, toss a kettlebell in their car, and complete the program on the road in hotel rooms or hotel gyms. It is so accessible all you need to do is hit play in the MTNTOUGH+ app and you will be coached through each workout.
3. You Don't Need Two Hours To Train Each Day
Look, many of us are extremely busy with not a ton of time to make it to the gym. Only a small percentage of us have access to elite training centers and elite equipment. With kids, families, work and life not many have two hours to train each day. The good news is, a little bit of training will go a long way. KB20 can be done at home with 20-50 minute workouts and this small change in your lifestyle will drastically improve your performance in the hills. It is about micro goals and some training is absolutely better than no training at all, even if that is 2-3 times per week.

MTNTOUGH believes that mental toughness is just as important as physical strength and that the strongest muscle in the human body is the one between your ears. With a coaching staff comprised of former Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and renowned physical trainers—the workouts aren’t easy. The goal is to prepare clients for both the unthinkable and the everyday—to have the mental capacity and physical stamina to self-rescue in an emergency, or grind through a 12-hour workday and still play with the kids after dinner. Ara Megerdichian, MTNTOUGH coach and former U.S. Army officer and Ranger, believes the best way to harden the mind is by reaching and exceeding physical boundaries, by taking challenges once considered impossible and making them attainable and repeatable.
